HIF and MIF-a nifty way to delay senescence?
Article Abstract:
Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1), a well-characterized transcription factor that mediates cellular adaptation to low-oxygen environment and regulates other pathophysiological cellular processes, has played a key role in attenuating the premature cellular senescence. The interplay between HIF-MIF (macrophage inhibitory factor)-p53-mediated pathway and the p16/Rb-dependent pathway are discussed in terms of senescence regulation.

Smurf2 up-regulation activates telomere-dependent senescence
Article Abstract:
Up-regulation of Smurf2, an E3 ubiquitin ligase implicated in TGF-beta signaling, is reported as a specific consequence of telomere attrition in human fibroblasts and that such up-regulation is sufficient to produce the senescence phenotype. It is observed that the senescence-inducing actions of Smurf2 occur in the absence of detectable DNA damage or stress response.

HIF1[alpha] delays premature senescence through the activation of MIF
Article Abstract:
The role of the hypoxia-inducible factor 1 [alpha] (HIF1[alpha]) transcription factor in preventing senescence in aerobic and hypoxic conditions is investigated. The results have highlighted a novel role for HIF1[alpha] under aerobic conditions and have identified macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) as a crucial effector of HIF[alpha] that delays senescence.
